AZIZA BRAHIM

Born and raised in the Saharawi refugee camps lining the frontier between Algeria and Western Sahara, Aziza Brahim’s life has been shaped by formidable hardship and unwavering determination. Escaping from these camps and the oppressive regime that followed Morocco’s 1975 invasion of Western Sahara, Aziza journeyed to Cuba as a young teenager to pursue her secondary education.

Aziza Brahim's music mirrors the sorrow and hope of her people. Growing up in one of these camps in the Algerian desert, alongside thousands of other Saharawi displaced from their homes in Western Sahara, the refugee camp became the place that shaped her.

Currently, Aziza lives in exile in Spain, where she has composed and recorded several albums including her latest release "Mawja". The album continues to feature her trademark fusion of haul, the traditional rhythmic roots of her Saharawi culture, alongside the Iberian and Cuban sounds which have influenced her on her life journey to date, together with an expansion of percussion sounds from around the globe together with an exploration of elements such as Clash drum patterns. In her words, “It’s very rooted in the blues, but with an inclination towards punk – desert punk!
