NDUDUZO MAKHATHINI

Nduduzo Makhathini’s music is intense, spiritual, and deeply moving. With his unique vocals in his native language isiZulu and his virtuosic piano playing, he creates a sound universe wrapped in hypnotic phrasing. Makhathini uses his language and musical expression to convey ritual, spirituality, and reflections on grief and healing, drawing on his fascinating background as a sangoma – a traditional healer.

Nduduzo Makhathini is a pianist, composer, and musicologist with a PhD in music from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he also teaches. With numerous awards to his name, he most recently received the prestigious “Live Act of the Year – International” at the German Jazz Prize. Signed to the legendary Blue Note Records with twelve albums under his belt, Makhathini has collaborated with artists such as Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Richard Bona, Shabaka Hutchings, and WDR Big Band. Today, he is regarded as one of the most innovative figures in contemporary jazz.

The award-winning Aarhus Jazz Orchestra is one of Europe’s leading big bands. With its multifaceted expression and high artistic level, the orchestra has captivated both audiences and critics since its founding in 1977. Playing a central role in the development and dissemination of jazz in Denmark, the orchestra has received several awards over the years, including at the Danish Music Awards Jazz.
