Join our Percussion Workshop, if you wish to learn about percussion in traditional folk songs from various cultures in Europe, Latin-America and North Africa.

INTRODUCTION WORKSHOP

The introduction workshop is open for anyone, who is curious to learn about various folk traditions and percussion. We will get familiar with styles common in various European, Latin American and North African folk traditions.

We will be working as a group, focusing on interplay, rhythmic games and getting familiar with various instruments and roles present in a percussion ensemble. No prior experience with music is needed to participate.

ADVANCED WORKSHOP

During the advanced workshop, the participants will work more in depth with technique and will be learning two original arrangements, which will be presented on a concert together with RIGÓ choir at Marienlyst Parkfestival.

On previous workshops we have worked on songs and styles from Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Sweden, Denmark and Kurdistan. On this occasion we will be focusing on a French and a Chilean folk song.

We recommend this course for those who have some experience with music (singing or playing an instrument). Being able to read sheet music is not required as we will learn all material by ear. As the workshop is based on the interplay between different instruments and roles, participants of different levels will find challenges equal to their own level and interest.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Tiago Candal is a Portuguese-Brazilian multi-instrumentalist, composer and sound technician based in Porto. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Production and Technology and a Master’s Degree in Composition.

He has several years of experience in playing, learning and teaching traditional music from different parts of the Globe, and over 15 years of experience in music pedagogy - ranging in a variety of contexts from music schools, workshops and mentoring exchanges for young folk musicians.
