PHØNIX & SANGKA
The adventure between East and West began in a raw factory hall in Beijing’s new art district, 798. At the opening of the new Danish Cultural Institute in Beijing in 2014, Phønix performed Danish folk music at one end of the hall, while SangKa stood at the other, letting the tones of her Chinese instrument flow through the space. Since then, they have performed together several times — at SPOT Festival, Kulturmødet Mors, Musik i Tide Festival, and on concert tours in Denmark and China’s Guangdong province.
Phønix is one of Denmark’s most experienced folk bands. Their distinctive sound is rooted in Danish and Scandinavian folk music and song traditions, which they continuously expand toward new horizons with a contemporary and unmistakable tone. Their intense and energetic live performances have taken them across much of the world — from major folk festivals to the most intimate club stages.
SangKa was born and raised in Beijing and began playing the guzheng at the age of five. In 2007, she entered the China Conservatory of Music and today works as a full-time professional musician. Highlights from her career include a solo performance at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
