Join us for a wonderful evening in the Turquoise Garden as we welcome the West African dance and drum group Wood and Skin!

Wood and Skin’s dancers open the show in vibrant costumes, followed by an energetic musical performance by Baba Kone World Music.

WOOD AND SKIN

Wood and Skin started in 1993 and is the city’s oldest West African group. They perform traditional dance and drumming rooted in cultures from Mali, Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea.

Guinea was one of the first West African countries to gain independence and established the national ensemble "Les Ballets Africains." This troupe toured the world with their impressive dance and drum shows, inspiring audiences so much that many wanted to try dancing and drumming themselves. In this way, both West African dance and the traditional drum, the djembe, spread worldwide, creating a global network around traditional West African dance and drumming.

Most members of Wood and Skin have over the years attended workshops in Denmark, Europe, the USA, and West Africa.

BABA KONE WORLD MUSIC

Baba Kone World Music captures the essence of the sound of original African handmade instruments like the djembe, balafon, and doun, combined with Western instruments in beautiful harmonies. It’s a show full of surprises, with balafons being swung through the air and played at a furious tempo. Here, you understand why Africans are said to be born with hearts full of drumbeats.
