This afternoon we are screening Listen Up! — a warm, funny and thought-provoking film about being in between: between childhood and adulthood, in the middle of summer, and in the midst of all the questions that arise when you’re figuring out who you are.
ABOUT THE FILM
It’s summer holiday, and 13-year-old Mahmoud is, as usual, facing long days hanging out on the bench in front of the apartment block with his friend Arif. But this summer turns out a little differently when the family is visited by Uncle Ji from Pakistan, and Mahmoud is tasked with showing him around Oslo. At the same time, he is responsible for looking after his younger brother Ali, who behaves differently from other boys his age.
Listen Up! is a humorous, sharp and charming story about feeling out of place — and about choosing what kind of person you want to become. Set among Norway’s concrete housing blocks, this coming-of-age film explores themes of identity, belonging, integration and gender with both warmth and edge.
The film is based on Sharif Gulraiz’ bestselling novel of the same name, with a screenplay by Erlend Loe and Nora Elisabeth Landsrød.
