This concert is developed as a world premiere at turkis and created by composer and drummer Frej Førstevælger (Bagland, I Think You’re Awesome) in collaboration with composer and bassist Jens Mikkel Madsen (I Think You’re Awesome, Øyunn), who is also the bandleader of Oh No Dinosaurs.
The work explores a fundamental question in contemporary music: what makes music human in a time shaped by perfection and artificial intelligence?

ABOUT THE PIECE
At the core of the piece is a shared artistic interest in rhythm and groove as something living and human – rather than something fixed within a metronomic pulse and mathematical subdivisions. Instead of allowing the music to be governed by a quantized rhythmic grid, the work is rooted in the musicians’ shared listening, timing, and embodied sense of time.
The two artists work with related ideas, but approach this field from different angles. Jens Mikkel Madsen focuses on rhythmic flexibility and phrasing across longer musical forms, inspired by Nordic vocal traditions and the energy of jazz. Frej Førstevælger’s work centers on the smallest shifts in timing – the micro-movements that emerge when music is played by humans rather than machines. These ideas are also inspired by folk traditions from different parts of the world, where swing and pulse are shaped collectively and intuitively. In the newly composed repertoire, Jens Mikkel and Frej explore how these two rhythmic ideas can expand and enrich one another.
The audience is invited into a musical space defined by intense closeness, organic movement, and constant attentiveness between the musicians. The music moves irregularly yet collectively – like a single organism – gradually opening the audience’s senses to the human dimension of music.
The work is performed by the band Oh No Dinosaurs. The group consists of four of Aarhus’ most interesting musicians, brought together by a shared desire to develop and explore instrumental music so that jazz does not fade away. The band is both a musical predator, tearing into the pulse, and a quiet herbivore slowly growing large and majestic.
