MAZAHER
Mazaher is a rare ensemble where women play a central role in an ancient musical tradition originating from several countries in the region. The musicians in Mazaher are among the last Zar practitioners in Egypt.
The music Mazaher presents is inspired by three different styles within the Egyptian Zar tradition. Zar is a communal healing ritual with singing, polyrhythmic drumming, and dancing, mainly carried by women (while men have secondary roles), where women are the primary participants. It stands out distinctly from other Egyptian musical traditions.
Traditionally, Zar was performed in small, dark alleys in Cairo, away from the public eye, where soul, body, and senses could find rest and ecstasy. At the concert, Mazaher invites you into a ritual where Zar music opens a space for healing and trance.
Members Um Sameh, Um Hassan, and Nour El Sabah are among the last in the world to master this unique musical form. This is a truly special experience you don’t want to miss.
THE HANDOVER
The Handover is a critically acclaimed trio from Egypt, Norway, and Belgium, playing hypnotic, trance-inducing music inspired by ritual rhythms of Egyptian rural life, combined with a healthy dose of psychedelia, kraut riffs, and experimental sounds. Their self-titled album, released by the American cult label Sublime Frequencies (April 2024), has been called one of the label’s best releases.
Since forming in 2023, The Handover has established itself as a phenomenal live act through concerts in Egypt and several festivals across Europe. On stage, the trio sits in a close circle to support the almost telepathic communication between the musicians. A concert with The Handover is a long journey — a gradual build-up from meditative drones to an ecstatic climax with sparkling dance rhythms.
